OffโPiste Guiding & Skills Coaching in Zermatt
Find the best snow, build real offโpiste skills, and stay safe with a local expert
Experience Zermattโs hidden offโpiste terrain with a Swissโqualified guide and instructor. Whether you want a pure guiding day or a focused coaching day on avalanche safety and touring skills, you get local knowledge, tailored terrain, and a safetyโfirst approach.
Why book with me?
- Swiss Federal Brevet qualification (4 years) โ fully certified offโpiste instructor/guide.
- 10 years in Zermatt โ deep knowledge of the mountain, snow patterns, and access points.
- Safetyโfirst approach โ we only travel in avalanche terrain with full avalanche kit and a clear plan.
- Local insight โ many of the best offโpiste areas arenโt obvious to visitors; Iโll take you to the right places at the right time.
- Tailored to your group โ terrain, pace, and coaching focus are chosen based on your skiing level, fitness, and goals.
What youโll experience
We focus on safe, enjoyable offโpiste skiing matched to your ability and ambitions:
- Strong Intermediate to advanced skiers: explore freeride zones such as Rote Nase, Furgg, Hirli, Gornergrat, and beyond.
- Crossโborder options: when conditions and plans allow, we can include Cervinia (Italy) and other highโalpine terrain.
- Best snow of the day: I monitor conditions and recent tracks to choose lines with the best quality snow and safest route options.
- Skills and confidence: beyond just guiding, I share tips on line choice, snow reading, and offโpiste technique so you leave more confident.
Many of the best descents are not signposted or obvious unless you know the mountain. Thatโs where local experience makes the day.
OffโPiste Skills Coaching
Add a dedicated skills day (or blend skills into your guiding day) to build the foundations for safe, independent offโpiste and backcountry skiing.
Avalanche awareness & avoidance
Learn how to read terrain and snow like a local:
- Understanding avalanche terrain: slope angle, aspect, wind loading, and trigger points.
- Reading snowpack and weather clues during the day.
- Route choice and group travel techniques to minimise risk.
- How to plan your own offโpiste lines with a conservative, safetyโfirst mindset.
Avalanche rescue skills
Practical, handsโon training in essential rescue techniques:
- Correct use of transceiver, shovel, and probe.
- Efficient search patterns, pinpointing, and strategic shovelling.
- Group roles and communication in a rescue scenario.
- How to run a fast, calm, and effective companion rescue.
These sessions are run in safe, controlled terrain and adapted to your level.
Touring & backcountry travel skills
For skiers interested in ski touring or moving efficiently in the backcountry:
- Skinning technique: efficient stride, kick turns, and skin track management.
- Uphill pacing and energy conservation on long days.
- Moving safely through complex terrain (ridges, couloirs, glacier approaches).
- Basics of route planning, map reading, and using GPS/altimeter.
You can book a pure skills day, or combine coaching with guided offโpiste runs so you immediately apply what you learn in real terrain.
Helicopter Drops & Glacial Travel (with IFMGA Mountain Guide)
For bigger alpine objectives, I can arrange helicopter dropโoffs and glacial travel days together with an IFMGAโcertified mountain guide.
These are offered as extra services and tailored to your goals, fitness, and experience:
- Heliski / heliโdrop options (where legally and operationally possible): access remote, highโquality descents not reachable by lifts.
- Glacier travel: roped travel, crevasse rescue basics, and movement on crampons when required.
- Highโalpine itineraries: multiโpeak days, long descents, and classic Zermatt/Cervinia alpine routes.
Because these activities involve higher alpine risk and logistics, they are planned separately, with:
- A dedicated IFMGA mountain guide (in addition to or instead of me, depending on the objective).
- Custom pricing based on route, group size, helicopter time, and equipment needs.
- A preโtrip briefing on fitness, experience, and gear requirements.
If youโre interested in heliโdrops or serious glacial objectives, mention this when you enquire and Iโll outline suitable options and costs.
Safety & equipment
We always travel in potential avalanche terrain with full safety gear and a clear safety briefing.
Included in your day:
- Guide and/or coaching service with full safety protocol
- Avalanche equipment for up to 2 people (transceiver, shovel, probe)
Not included / to arrange:
- Airbag backpack โ strongly recommended for offโpiste; you can bring your own or rent locally.
- Additional avalanche sets for groups larger than 2 โ must be provided or rented separately.
- Skis, boots, touring gear (skins, bindings, etc.), helmet, clothing, lift pass, and insurance.
- Specialized glacial gear (ropes, harnesses, crampons) for IFMGAโguided alpine days โ arranged as needed.
Before heading offโpiste, we do a quick transceiver check, route briefing, and agree on group spacing and communication. On skills days, we spend extra time practicing with the gear so you feel confident using it.
Pricing
750 CHF per day (full day, typically ~6 hours on snow, excluding lift pass and lunch).
- Price covers guiding and/or skills coaching and use of avalanche equipment for up to 2 people.
- For groups larger than 2, extra avalanche sets must be arranged (rental available in Zermatt).
- Private guiding/coaching only โ the day is dedicated to your group.
Extras (on request):
- IFMGA mountain guide for glacial travel, highโalpine routes, and heliโdrop objectives.
- Custom multiโday programs mixing resort offโpiste, touring, and alpine objectives.
- Help arranging airbag and touring equipment rental.
All extra services are quoted individually based on your plan, group size, and logistics.
Who is this for?
This offโpiste guiding and coaching is ideal if you:
- Are a confident intermediate to advanced skier comfortable on varied snow and steeper terrain.
- Want to ski more than the marked pistes but stay safe with a local expert.
- Want access to local knowledge and the best snow of the day, not just the most obvious lines.
- Want to learn real offโpiste skills: avalanche awareness, rescue, and touring technique.
- Prefer a private, tailored day rather than a fixed group course.
If youโre newer to offโpiste but strong onโpiste, tell me your level and goals; we can choose appropriate terrain and build your confidence safely.
Meeting point & logistics
- Meeting point: typically at the Matterhorn Express valley station (or another agreed location in Zermatt/Cervinia). Exact time and place are confirmed after booking, depending on conditions and lift openings.
- Start time: usually morning, adjusted to snow conditions, weather, and lift schedule.
- Lift pass: not included โ youโll need a valid Zermatt (and Cervinia, if crossing) ski pass.
- Lunch: we take a break in a mountain restaurant or on the snow, depending on the route and weather.
For IFMGAโguided alpine or heliโdrop days, meeting point and start time are adapted to the specific itinerary.
